True North will always report on the truth

Here at True North, we’re getting ready for a huge 2020. But we need your help.

Reporting on news that actually matters to Canadians isn’t easy. This is why for the month of December our goal is to raise $100,000. We know this is an ambitious goal, but it’s necessary if we want to compete with the big mainstream outlets.

LAWTON: New Year’s resolution for the right – start pushing back against the media

There’s no denying 2019 was a challenging year for the right in Canada. A lot of the problems, however, came about because conservatives still haven’t learned the value of rejecting premises championed by the left, which so often seep into media coverage of Canadian politics.

True North’s Andrew Lawton presents a New Year’s resolution for the right in 2020: push back against the media when it’s warranted.

That’s what True North is doing every day. Support this effort by joining Andrew’s Heritage Club to support the work we’re doing: https://tnc.news/lawton-heritage-club/

FUREY: A Decade in Review – Canadian Identity

True North’s Anthony Furey wants to know what will Canadian identity look like in the decade ahead?

Justin Trudeau once bizarrely called Canada “the first post-national state.” He said, “there is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada.”

MALCOLM: Top Stupid Things Trudeau Said in 2019

At first glance, it may seem like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a pretty good year. After all, he managed to squeeze through the October election with a minority government despite having a lower approval rating in Canada than Donald Trump in the U.S.

Trudeau practically bribed the media with bailout funds, ran a divisive campaign that pit Canadians against each other and aimed to ruin the reputation of those who stood in his way.

It paid off, and Trudeau won the election. But that doesn’t mean that 2019 was a good year for him. Au contraire. It was another year full of missteps, gaffes and embarrassing moments that made all Canadians cringe.

Without further ado, here is my list of the top Stupid Things Trudeau Said in 2019:

9. After the Globe and Mail revealed that Trudeau’s office attempted to interfere in the SNC-Lavalin trial by pressuring former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould, Trudeau denied the allegations.

“The allegations reported in the Globe story this morning are false. Neither the current nor the previous attorney general was ever directed by me or by anyone in my office to take a decision in this matter,” said Trudeau.

It turns out, the only thing “false” was Trudeau’s statement. The Ethics Commissioner found that Trudeau did indeed break the law by attempting to interfere with Wilson-Raybould’s decision.

8. In the aftermath of the SNC-Lavalin scandal, Trudeau was asked about the company spending $30,000 on prostitutes for Moammar Gadhafi’s son while visiting Canada. In response, Trudeau claimed he was “standing up for Canadians workers” and “good jobs.”

Does this mean “good jobs” include prostitutes for foreign dictators?

7. Trudeau loves talking about the middle class and those “working hard to join it.” He talks about the middle class in campaign speeches, government announcements and he even created a Ministry for “Middle Class Prosperity.” Surely, he would have a definition of the middle class then right? Wrong.

When Trudeau was asked to define the middle class in a year-end interview with Breakfast Television, Trudeau responded by saying “Canadians know who’s in the middle class.”

6. Justin Trudeau is a male feminist. He smugly talks about it every chance he gets. But what kind of feminist would fire two strong female cabinet ministers because they disagreed with him? A fake feminist, that’s who.

During the Women Deliver 2019 Conference, Trudeau was asked about how firing tough women in his cabinet affects his feminism. He responded by saying, “it increases his feminism.” Seriously.

5. During an announcement, Trudeau mixed up China and Japan. He made the blunder while addressing the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou.

“I can emphasize that Canada and Japan remain steadfast as friends,” he said.

4. Ahead of a G20 meeting in June, Trudeau met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and during their meeting, Trudeau mixed up Japan and China, again, this time while sitting right next to Abe.

“On the occasion of 90 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and China… uh…. Canada and Japan,” said Trudeau.

3. Trudeau caused an international stir when he was caught on a hot mic mocking Trump at a NATO summit.

“He was late because he takes a 40 minute press conference…. You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor,” said Trudeau, oblivious to the fact that he was at a reception surrounded by news media cameras and microphones.

2. During the fall election campaign, Canadians learned that our PM was something of a blackface aficionado. He donned the racist outfit not once, not twice, not thrice, but, well, we have no idea how many times because he did it so often he can’t remember.

Trudeau blamed his former racist attitude on “the layers of privilege that I have.”

Personally, I’d blame the layers of black face paint.

1. And finally, Trudeau made an announcement that his government would ban single-use plastics by 2021. During the announcement, he gave a rambling incoherent answer that would make a Miss America contestant blush.

“We have recently switched to drinking water bottles out of… (shakes his head) water out of… when we have water bottles out of plastic… Sorry… Away from plastic towards (gesturing) paper like drink-box water bottles sort of things,” said Trudeau.

Let’s hope 2020 is a less embarrassing year for our PM.

KNIGHT: Trudeau and Morneau don’t seem to care about the economy

Canada lost 71,000 jobs in November. Canadian inflation is up 2.2%. Retail and wholesale spending is down. Economists are downsizing their growth projections to barely 1%.

But Justin Trudeau says he disagrees with the economists who are sounding the alarm on the Canadian economy.

True North’s Leo Knight says the economic red flags are not good, but neither Morneau or Trudeau seem to care.

LAWTON: Can libertarians and social conservatives work together?

As the Conservative party reckons with its future, which includes selecting a conservative leader, it’s worth exploring just how big that oft-cited big, blue tent is. For example, can social conservatives and libertarians get along?

True North’s Andrew Lawton, who identifies with both groups on several issues, says yes. But it means an important discussion about political priorities needs to take place.

FUREY: A Decade in Review – Social Media

True North’s Anthony Furey says in the past decade, social media has turned into social mania.

The 2000s were the decade we first experimented with social media. Looking back now, it all seems very quaint.

Social media could get even crazier in the next decade. Or perhaps we’ll all give our heads a shake and rein it in.

What do you think?

As natural population growth declines, Nova Scotia sees record-breaking immigration levels

Nova Scotia’s population growth has reached an all-time high since 1972, driven largely by record-breaking immigration levels.

The province has had a consistently declining natural population growth rate since 2016.

“Nova Scotia’s natural population change (the number of births, less the number of deaths) has been negative for several years,” writes the Nova Scotia Finance and Treasury Board.

“Between April 1, 2018 and June 30, 2018, there were 2,164 births and 2,281 deaths, amounting to a natural population decline of 117.”

Over a 12 month period from October 1, 2018 to October 1, 2019, the province has seen a growth in population of 1.28% or a total of 12,339 new residents.

A majority of the new residents to the province have been immigrants. According to Statistics Canada estimates, 58% of the population growth was driven by immigration. Nova Scotia saw a total of 7,165 immigrants enter the province during this time period.

Meanwhile, Canadians moving into the province from other provinces contributed only 1,090 new residents.

Another record was broken in the third quarter of the year, between July 1 and October 1, 2019. This period saw a growth of 5,373 newcomers to the province, 2,471 of which were immigrants.

According to the Government of Nova Scotia, this is the highest immigration level in a quarter since World War II.

“Immigration is a priority and is key to filling persistent labour needs and increasing our population,” said Nova Scotia’s Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab.

MALCOLM: Are your taxes going to fund terrorism?

Canadian aid dollars went to purchasing equipment that was later stolen by an armed Islamist terror group in Syria, according to declassified documents obtained by Global News.

Canadians should be wary of our tax dollars going overseas to support various unaccountable schemes under the auspices of foreign aid.

True North’s founder Candice Malcolm says Canadians need to think twice about foreign aid.

ISIS beheads 11 Nigerian Christians on Christmas Day

Members of the terror group ISIS reportedly executed 11 Christian hostages in the African nation of Nigeria on Christmas Day.

On Wednesday a horrific video produced by ISIS’s media arm Amaq appeared online showing one man shot and another ten beheaded by a masked individual.

The executions were committed by the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP), also known as Boko Haram, a Nigeria-based Islamic terrorist group. The group called the executions revenge for the killing of ISIS leaders earlier this year.

“We killed them as revenge for the killings of our leaders, including Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and Abul-Hasan Al-Muhajir in Iraq and Syria,” an ISWAP spokesman told local media.

ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in October during a raid by the U.S. army. Baghdadi blew himself up using a suicide vest during a firefight with U.S. troops.

Journalist Ahmad Salkida says that the executions followed failed negotiations with the Nigerian government, who ISWAP has been at war with since 2002.

“The decision to execute the captives was rather swift, abrupt and shocking,” Salkida said.

“ISWAP had reportedly opened a window of negotiations… to exchange the freedom of the captives with those of its members in government custody but the Nigerian government failed to take the offer.”

Despite losing its middle eastern empire, ISIS continues to pose a major threat around the world.

On Easter Sunday, ISIS launched a series of attacks on churches in Sri Lanka, claiming the lives of 359 people.

Experts suggest that ISIS will continue to operate around the world as the 30,000 foreign ISIS fighters will all eventually return to their home countries, including Canada.

At least 60 former ISIS fighters have returned to Canada. Despite some allegedly being involved in heinous crimes abroad, only four have been charged.
