The federal government plans to impose a temporary, two-year cap on international student permits.

The federal government announced that the number of future study permits being issued will be “significantly” limited in the wake of massive fraud in Canada’s international student program.  

International students seeking asylum in Canada has become an explosive trend, with the number more than doubling over the last five years.

According to reports from the Elspeth Heyworth Centre for Women, a Toronto-based nonprofit organization, female international students – mostly of South Asian origin – are turning to prostitution to pay their high rents and costly tuition fees. 

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced the changes on Friday, despite a worrying trend of new coronavirus cases among Canadians.
