KNIGHT: Trudeau is trying to buy your vote with your money

The Trudeau government is acting like the election has already started.

Political ads are in full swing, and the Trudeau Liberals are spending money like drunken sailors. The only difference is a sailor spends their own money. The Liberals are spending YOUR money.

True North’s Leo Knight says the Trudeau government is trying to buy your vote with your money.

FUREY: My media colleagues better get their anti-Scheer bias in check pronto

It shouldn’t be news that the Liberals released 14-year-old footage of Andrew Scheer opposing same sex marriage. Scheer has since clarified that he accepts the law as it is and will oppose any attempts to overturn it.

But the mainstream media the media took the bait, amplified it and jammed it down our throats.

Anthony Furey says the media would be wise to govern themselves accordingly and check their anti-Scheer bias pronto.

Check out Anthony’s latest in the Toronto Sun.

LAWTON: Official bilingualism has gone too far

A French-speaking Ontario couple has been awarded $21,000 from Air Canada after suing the company for supposedly violating their language rights. The couple took aim at a number of things, including the French translation of “Exit” being in smaller font than the English, and the word “Lift” being engraved into the seatbelt latches without a French translation.

The lawsuit violates the spirit of bilingualism, which should be about genuine discrimination and not nitpicking, True North’s Andrew Lawton says.

Liberals knew about disgraced candidates anti-semitic remarks since June: CIJA

The Liberal Party of Canada has revoked their candidacy for a Montreal-area candidate after past anti-semitic remarks were reported on in the media, despite the party knowing about his behaviour since June.

A report by B’nai B’rith revealed that the Saint-Léonard Saint-Michel candidate, Hassan Guillet, expressed past beliefs and statements which were anti-semitic.

In one case, Guillet was to have celebrated the release of Hamas-activist Raed Salah on social media. Salah has claimed in the past that Jewish people were behind 9/11 and that they use children’s blood to bake “holy bread”. In the post which, has since been deleted, Guillet allegedly glorified Salah as a “jihad-fighter”.

Another interview by Radio Canada shows Guillet speaking of Israel as an apartheid state and peddling the anti-semitic trope that Jared Kushner, who is Jewish himself, has dual-loyalties to Israel.

In prepared comments provided to True North, Guillet claims that his views have “evolved” since he made those comments.

“Since then I have evolved. Everyone who knows me, personally or through my works, knows that I am against hate, racism, anti-Semitism and violence regardless of the identity of the perpetrators or victims,” said Guillet.

“If these statements could be considered offensive to some of my fellow citizens of Jewish faith I apologize. My intention was not to offend anyone.”

According to the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, they notified the Liberals of Guillet’s beliefs back in June.

“We discovered Mr. Guillet’s comments and in June registered our concerns directly with the Liberal Party. Party officials indicated that they would look into the matter,” reads a Facebook post by CIJA.

However it wasn’t until B’nai B’rith reported on the story on Friday, and prominent Conservative Party members, including party leader Andrew Scheer, called for his ejection, that the Liberal Party decided to sever their ties with Guillet.

“I find it shocking that this candidate was able to become a Liberal candidate in the first place and it raises the question as to why people with these hateful views are attracted to the Liberal Party in the first place,” wrote Scheer on the incident.

In the statement announcing the end of Guillet’s candidacy, the Liberals hint that an internal review regarding the matter had been going for several weeks.

“Following a thorough internal review process that has been on-going for a few weeks, the Liberal Party of Canada has made the decision to revoke the candidacy of Mr. Guillet for the riding of Saint-Leonard Saint-Michel in this fall’s election,” claimed the official Liberal Party statement.

True North reached out to the Liberal Party for comment but have yet to hear back.

KNIGHT: Canadians in Cuban justice system can expect no support from government

A Canadian man, Benjamin Tomlin, 46, an employee of the Canadian Development Investment Corp., in March of 2019 was sentenced to 10 years in a Cuban jail ostensibly for having sex with a minor, a 15-year-old girl.

The story begins in February of 2017 when he was in Cuba for a holiday at a resort in Varadero. On the last night of his holiday, he was partying at a friend’s house and met some Cuban nationals. They went to a nightclub in Cardenas, a town about 30 kilometres south of Varadero.

After the nightclub, the group went to a private home. Tomlin passed out and when he awoke he was missing his money and his phone. He claims he did not have sex with anyone that night.

He made his way back to Varadero and to the airport then flew back to Canada.  He chalked it up as a lesson learned and got on with his life. What he didn’t know was that two of the females in the group were underage prostitutes who were under investigation by the Cuban authorities.

When they were arrested after Tomlin left the country, they came up with a story about Tomlin presumably to deflect from their own troubles. A warrant was issued for Tomlin but he was never told.

A year and a half later, in August of 2018, he returned to Cuba for another holiday and was promptly arrested. He was held in custody until his trial in March. His trial lasted less than a day. He was convicted despite not being identified by anyone. The two prostitutes didn’t testify but rather, the courts used their original statements to police to convict Tomlin.

It would be generous to call it a kangaroo court, but such is the way things are in Cuba.

Last year I wrote extensively about the case of two Vancouver area police officers, Jordan Long of Port Moody Police Department and Mark Simms of Vancouver Police.

In March of 2018, they were on holiday at a resort in Varadero hanging around the bar at the resort pool. One of them later had sex with a woman who had propositioned them. I should add they were both young, single men.

The girl, also Canadian from Ontario, left the room and the boys had a nap before dinner. They were awakened by police and hotel security and taken into custody. They were not allowed to talk to each other and were held in custody for a week.

This started a 10-month long nightmare that would last through a trial in which they were acquitted of a charge of sexual assault and then had to wait through the appeal period which is totally in control of the prosecution.

The appeal ultimately failed and they were allowed to leave the country. They have since returned to work for their respective departments but are still under investigation by the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner after the father of the girl complained.

Without going into the too many of the facts of the case, they were arrested after the girl claimed she was dragged from the pool bar, through the busy lobby and up three flights of stairs where she was raped in their room.  The distance from the pool to the lobby is about 500 metres.

Yes, the story defies all credulity, but they were charged nonetheless and their nightmare began.

In the Cuban system of, dare I call it justice, the accused is assigned a defence counsel who is an employee of the government. The prosecutor is an employee of the government and the trial judges are employees of the government. The translator assigned by the court to assist is also an employee of the government.

The two officers tried to get evidence such as the video from the resort which they knew would be exculpatory but they were denied access. It wasn’t until a resort security guard came forward and testified that he saw the girl when she was leaving and she was fine and never said a word that the case collapsed.

They got lucky. I’m afraid Benjamin Tomlin may not be as lucky. It seems the only people who could testify on his behalf were the same folks who took his cash and phone. Tomlin has filed an appeal of his conviction and it remains to be seen how all this might end.

Like the two cops, Tomlin tried to get consular assistance. Global Affairs Canada declined to “interfere” in the Cuban justice system.

This week, the Minister, Chrystia Freeland was in Cuba to meet with her Cuban counterpart Bruno Eduardo Rodriguez Parrilla.

Barbara Harvey, spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada told CBC the “Government was aware of a Canadian citizen imprisoned in Cuba.” There is no indication whether Freeland raised the Tomlin matter in her meeting. My guess is no.

As the two Vancouver cops learned, you are on your own if you fall afoul of the Cuban justice system.

Every year more than 1.3 million Canadians travel to Cuba. That is nearly ten times the amount of the next largest country, the U.S. of which about 240,000 of its citizens travel to Cuba annually.

Considering tourism is the largest industry in Cuba and Canada is the largest provider of tourist dollars, one might think Global Affairs Canada would have a bit of leverage to deal with the Cubans when there is a miscarriage of justice. But, apparently, as a matter of policy the Trudeau government won’t stand up to Cuba and support Canadian citizens.

Something to consider if you are pondering a holiday there.

MALCOLM: This week’s most biased news!

Maxime Bernier’s billboard triggers mass hysteria amongst the mainstream media and leftist activists, even though most Canadians want less immigration. The Left won’t let Andrew Scheer attend pride parades any more, but didn’t they want him to attend just a few weeks ago?

True North’s Candice Malcolm dissects this week’s most biased news stories in Canada in a NEW True North segment!

FUREY: It’s looking like an ugly campaign season

The media has been focused on Andrew Scheer’s opinions on gay marriage….from 14 years ago.

Is this really what is important right now? What about policy? What about what’s happening currently in Canada?

True North’s Anthony Furey comments on the absurdity of it all.

FUREY: Chinese foreign influence now extends to our Pride Parades

BY: ANTHONY FUREY

It would be funny were it not so troubling. The line-up to Montreal Pride being vetoed by pro-Beijing elements is absurd but, apparently, it’s also true.

Hong Kong LGBT activists now living in Montreal had planned to march in the recent August pride parade to show their support for both gay rights and democracy in Hong Kong. They’d been approved by the parade organizers and were good to go until the parade received threats that pro-Communist elements would disrupt the parade if the Hong Kong LGBT contingent were allowed to march, according to a report from CBC. So the parade bowed to pressure and booted them from the lineup.

Well known Hong Kong gay rights activists Francis Tang Yiu-kwong even flew to Montreal to join  the group at the parade and instead had to march all by himself, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP). But then he was followed throughout the parade by individuals waving Chinese flags so he eventually stepped out of the parade for safety reasons.

It gets worse.

As the SCMP reports: “A WeChat group with 500 members had earlier discussed Action Free HK MTL’s scheduled participation in the march, with one commenter suggesting that the marchers should be followed, then confronted at the finish line.

“Wear something comfortable so we can beat them up,” the commenter wrote, adding a laughing emoji.”

The pro-China contingent also marched in the parade unapproved and had the nerve to sing the People’s Republic of China anthem during the moment of silence, which is held annually at all Pride parades to remember those who have died of AIDS.

No media outlet has so far been able to determine who actually made the complaints to Montreal Pride to get Hong Kongers booted from the parade. The police say they never forwarded any information to Pride and know nothing of the threats.

Still, this whole saga is incredibly alarming. These are individuals doing the bidding of the Chinese Communist cause who feel they have the right to dictate who marches in parades, threaten on WeChat to do what amounts to gay-bashing and sing Communist anthems over a memorial.

Recently, there’s been concern that Pride parades are caving to the demands of Black Lives Matter by banning cops. But whatever your views on BLM, at least they consist of Canadians making political demands about things happening in Canada. For all of its messiness, it’s at least an “in the family” squabble.

The same can’t be said here. This is foreign influence – with pro-Beijing elements brazenly thinking they have so much control over our country that they can even do something like dictate what happens at our Pride Parades.

And for those who say Pride isn’t their thing, that’s not the point. This could happen anywhere – any community event or any parade. It’s an assault on our broader society.

Men found guilty of plot to attack Via Rail passenger train granted retrial

Two men with alleged al-Qaeda links have been granted a retrial by the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Chiheb Esseghaier and Raed Jaser were found guilty and sentenced to serve life in prison in 2015 for plotting to carry out a terrorist attack on a passenger train. Essaghaier is a Tunisian citizen while Jaser is Palestinian and allegedly stateless.

The decision released by the court cites “a legal error by the trial judge” related to the composition of the jury.

“The trial judge’s error here took one of the three options, the exclusion of unsworn jurors while using rotating triers, away from Jaser,” wrote the three justices involved in the decision.

The plot by Esseghaier and Jaser was thwarted by police in 2013 after a year-long investigation dubbed “Operation SMOOTH”.

“Had this plot been carried out, it would have resulted in innocent people being killed or seriously injured,” said RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia at the time.

According to the police, the pair had already picked a route for the attack and had been observing the trains in their planning stages.

Both Jaser and Esseghaier were suspected to have been “receiving support from al-Qaeda (sic) elements in Iran”.

Prior to his terror activities, in 2004 Canadian officials decided against deporting Jaser over convictions for fraud. His alleged status as a “stateless person” was the reason behind the decision.

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada has said it “will proceed with the prosecution of Chiheb Esseghaier and Raed Jaser for terrorism offences”.

LAWTON: Stop With The Social Issues Litmus Test

Andrew Scheer is on the defensive over a nearly 15-year old speech in the House of Commons opposing same-sex marriage. Despite pledging to uphold the law of the land, and promising to not introduce any pro-life legislation, the Conservatives’ critics insist there’s a hidden social agenda.

True North’s Andrew Lawton says the Right needs to stop playing into the Left’s trap on these issues.
