While the British Columbia government’s official figures show assisted deaths are on the rise, an anti-euthanasia advocate is concerned with the quality of the data the province is providing.

An official with Veterans Affairs Canada inappropriately brought up doctor-assisted euthanasia with a veteran seeking treatment for mental health issues. 

Canada is among a handful of countries in the world to offer euthanasia services, and now – after 2 years of the Covid-19 pandemic which has resulted in a growing mental health crisis – the Trudeau government wants to expand doctor-assisted suicide to those suffering from mental health conditions. “The government cancelled our contract, took our property, and that was the end of the story,” Delta Hospice Society president Angelina Ireland told True North.

Health Canada has released a questionnaire asking Canadians for input on the government’s assisted suicide program. The survey focuses on “advanced requests,” which would allow people who might be incapable of making decisions in the future to give their advanced consent for the “Medical Assistance in Dying” program.
