FACT CHECK: Trudeau falsely claimed Conservatives denied pandemic, opposed masks

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Conservative party of denying the existence of the COVID-19 pandemic and opposing masks, but a True North fact check found this to be false.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, the Conservatives have not denied the pandemic’s existence and had actually supported mask-wearing before the federal government officially recommended it.

Trudeau made the accusation during a Wednesday Question Period exchange with Conservative MP and health critic Michelle Rempel Garner, who Trudeau accused of stoking suspicion of the science behind the virus.

“We’ve all seen Conservative politicians casting doubt on science, casting doubt on experts, saying ‘the pandemic isn’t real, you shouldn’t wear masks,’” Trudeau said. “It is really concerning to hear that kind of suspicion around what scientists and experts say from the Conservative health critic, however, knowing what the Conservative Party’s approach is on science, we shouldn’t be surprised.”

Included in Trudeau’s statement is the claim that Conservative politicians cast doubt on science and experts by claiming that the pandemic isn’t real, and that people shouldn’t wear masks.

A search through parliamentary records revealed that on the matter of the pandemic’s existence, Conservative MPs had raised concerns about a possible pandemic as far back as January 2020, nearly two months before the World Health Organization declared it.

On January 27, 2020, Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux asked the Liberal Health Minister if Canada had “enough antiviral drugs in the national emergency stockpile to address a possible broader outbreak?”

About a month later, Conservative MP Steven Blaney also raised concerns about a possible pandemic.

“The World Health Organization is talking about a possible pandemic, but what is the government doing? Nobody knows. Radio silence. This situation is very worrisome. This is a serious, high-risk issue, but the Liberals are twiddling their thumbs. What is the government’s plan for helping Canadians protect themselves from the coronavirus?” said Blaney.

In total, since the pandemic began Conservatives have addressed the coronavirus crisis as a “pandemic” at least 2439 times in various committee meetings and House of Commons affairs.

As for Conservative views on mask-wearing, records show that CPC MPs have been promoting or talking about the use of masks to combat the coronavirus as far back as January 2020, even while the federal government was specifically advising against masks.

During a Commons health committee meeting on January 29, 2020, Conservative MP Robert Gordon Kitchen advocated for the use of masks at border crossings and airports at a time when Health Minister Patty Hajdu was claiming that border closures were ineffective at curbing the virus.

In total, Conservatives discussed masks at least 405 different times since the pandemic began.

Neither former Conservative leader Andrew Scheer nor current leader Erin O’Toole ever denied the existence of the pandemic. O’Toole also came out in support of masks before the Public Health Agency of Canada recommended them.

“Yesterday, the U.S. Center for Disease Control suggested everyone should wear a mask. Every country that has a handle on the crisis appear to have more universal mask wearing. Canada should attempt this as well. Every measure helps,” tweeted O’Toole on April 4, 2020.

Scheer pointed out in an April 15, 2020 tweet that it was the federal government which had been inconsistent on mask advice.

“Right now there is no need to use a mask for well people,” said Dr. Theresa Tam said during a March 28 briefing.

“What we worry about is actually the potentially negative aspects of wearing masks where people are not protecting their eyes or, you know, other aspects of where the virus could enter your body, and that gives you a false sense of confidence,” she said, two days later.

Trials of two Michaels to begin soon: Chinese media

A Chinese state-owned newspaper is reporting that the trials of Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor will begin in the near future.

In an article on Thursday, the Global Times reported that the Chinese government will soon begin long-postponed trials for the Canadians. The two Michaels face charges of stealing unspecified government secrets.

“Another source close to the matter told the Global Times previously that due to the COVID-19 epidemic situation, the hearings for both cases have yet to commence, and the court will push forward the trial soon,” the article reads.

“Kovrig was accused of having used an ordinary passport and business visa to enter China to steal sensitive information and intelligence through contacts in China since 2017, while Spavor was accused of being a key source of intelligence for Kovrig.”

The two Michaels were arrested in December 2018. Their arrests are believed to be retaliation for Canada’s arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. warrant in 2018.

The Chinese legal system is known for being unfair, secretive and focused on fulfilling the agenda of the Chinese Communist Party. In 2019, the conviction rate in China stood at 99.9%.

If convicted, the two Michaels face life in prison.

Despite a Chinese state-owned paper claiming their trials are soon, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada said the government had not been notified by China.

“We are not aware of any set timeline for the trials. To date, Global Affairs Canada has not been notified of court hearings for Mr. Kovrig or Mr. Spavor,” Global Affairs Canada told Global News.

“Global Affairs Canada continues to monitor these cases closely.”

While the two Michaels have remained in prison for the past two years, Meng has lived in luxury in Vancouver while fighting her extradition to the United States.

Liberals, Bloc vote to allow mentally ill to seek assisted suicide

The House of Commons has accepted a Senate amendment that would allow those suffering from mental illness to seek assisted suicide.

The Liberal government pushed to adopt the Senate’s recommendation, with just three Liberal MPs voting against it. The House of Commons voted 180-149, with the Bloc Quebecois joining the Liberals and Conservative, Green and NDP MPs opposed.

Liberal MPs Steve Mackinnon, John McKay and Marcus Powlowski all broke ranks with the government and voted against Bill C-7, while Julie Dzerowicz abstained.

The amendments expand the scope of Bill C-7, which changes how Canadians can seek medically assisted suicide, and what the eligibility criteria are. Under the existing law, individuals with only mental illnesses are ineligible.

If C-7 passes, the prohibition on assisted suicide for the mentally ill will remain in place for two years, in which time parliament will have to study and pass any new regulations. If they cannot agree on any, the restriction simply drops off.

In the days before the vote, Conservatives had campaigned to see the amendments rejected. Joining them were concerned Canadians and experts who strongly oppose the amendments, including doctors and survivors of mental illness.

“Under the Liberal government’s amendment, medically assisted death will automatically be expanded to cover those with mental illness in 24 months,” Conservative Justice Critic Rob Moore said.

“At a time where Canadians often struggle to access mental health services, it sends a dire message — that the lives of those struggling with mental illness are not valued by this government.”

True North’s Andrew Lawton, a mental health advocate and suicide survivor, says the amendment contradicts the message that governments have historically promoted to those suffering from mental illness.

“Billions of dollars are invested into suicide prevention and awareness because society understands that mental illnesses are treatable, and that hope is important,” Lawton said. “For the government to adopt the position that suicide should not be prevented, but promoted and facilitated, undermines all of the incredibly important efforts to tell those suffering that life is worth living, and that recovery is possible.”

Conservative MPs had attempted to stall the vote and slow debate on Thursday, leading the Liberals and Bloc to join forces and vote for closure on debate.

The Conservatives also proposed their own amendment to remove mental health eligibility, saying it “could be seen as undermining suicide prevention initiatives and normalizing death as a solution to many forms of suffering.”

The Conservative amendment was defeated by a similar margin of 179-152.

Toronto Star producer tweets British Royal Family “invented” racism, colonialism

Toronto Star Producer and podcast host Saba Eitizaz implied in a tweet on Thursday that the British Royal Family “invented” racism and colonialism.

Eitizaz, who appears on the publication’s daily podcast “This Matters” made the comment in response to a retweet of a statement made by Prince William earlier today.

In the tweet, Prince William claims that the Royals are “not a racist family” following allegations made by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry during an Oprah Winfrey interview earlier this week.

True North reached out to Eitizaz to receive clarification on her remarks.

“My tweet was a satirical comment about the history of colonialism and colonization of more than half the world at a point in history – and its roots within the British monarchy,” said Eitizaz.

During her interview with Oprah, Markle alleged that an unnamed member of the Royal Family had inquired about the skin tone of her and Prince Harry’s son Archie when the couple was expecting the baby.

The allegations have since set off a flurry of negative media attention around the Royals forcing Queen Elizabeth II to issue a statement on the matter.

In her statement, the Queen claimed that she was saddened by Meghan and Harry’s experiences and promised to privately discuss the matter with them.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. Whilst some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members,” a statement on behalf of the Queen read.

The Toronto Star is beneficiary of the federal media bailout. According to a 2019 report by Blacklock’s Reporter, the Toronto Star was raking in $115, 385 a week in the form of benefits and credits from the Liberal government.

Despite the flow of federal funds, the publication was forced to axe dozens of its employees and halt publication of StarMetro newspapers across the country.

Most recently, the company announced it would be launching an online casino to help fund its journalism due to declining revenues.

Gender-neutral packaging for school menstrual products is “paramount,” advisory group insists

As part of its plan to introduce free menstrual products in all schools, an advisory committee with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) claims it’s “paramount” that the tampons and pads provided to students include gender-neutral packaging.

A January 28, 2021 report by the OCDSB’s Advisory Committee on Equity outlines the proposed Menstrual Equity (ME) Project which was passed at the beginning of this year. The project hopes to provide “coin-free” menstrual hygiene product dispensers in all student washrooms from grade 4 to 12 by September 2022.

“Consideration for the needs of all student demographics in the implementation and maintenance of this initiative is paramount, for example, private and unsupervised access, usage of gender-neutral language and packaging,” reads the report.

“Equity Instructional Coach Rice noted that she informed the Rainbow Educators and the LGBTQ2S+ community partners about the measures of the ME Project. All members of these stakeholder groups were in support of the motion and commented that the language contained within was thoughtfully considered.”

The report also calls on specific consultations with the Afro Caribbean Black community to ensure that “cultural sensitivity towards menstruation” is considered in the project’s implementation.

“This initiative was approved in late January and a team is being put together to plan for implementation in the coming months. Part of that plan will include identification and evaluation of products prior to beginning procurement,” OCDSB Communications Coordinator Darcy Knoll told True North.

The push for gender-neutral language follows a trend of school boards implementing social justice oriented policies.

Last year, the Ontario Upper Grand District School board admitted that they were “systemically racist” as an institution and announced that they would be implementing “anti-racism” training.

The plan includes a decision to ground all future decisions in “critical race theory.”

Meanwhile, the York Region District School Board voted in September to rename Vaughan Secondary School due to its alleged historical ties to slavery.

A Tale of Two Pandemics

It was the best of pandemics, it was the worst of pandemics. An Ontario public health official says because of the variants we’re actually in the midst of two separate pandemics right now, and, of course, that we need another lockdown – one stricter than the previous two – to get through it. True North’s Andrew Lawton exposes the latest shifts of the public health goalposts.

Also, conservatives say they want an election, but is the Conservative Party of Canada ready? Plus, Andrew sits down with independent journalist and activist Aaron Gunn to discuss his potential run for the leadership of the BC Liberals.

Record petition in support of gun rights presented before the House of Commons

Conservative Party MP Michelle Rempel Garner presented the largest petition in parliamentary history before the House of Commons on Thursday.

Petition e-2574 calls on the federal government to immediately end its gun ban and pass new laws that target criminals instead of legal gun owners.

“We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Prime Minister to immediately scrap his government’s May 1, 2020, Order in Council decision related to confiscating legally owned firearms and instead pass legislation that will target criminals, stop the smuggling of firearms into Canada, go after those who illegally acquire firearms, and apologize to legal firearms owners in Canada,” reads the petition.

The petition was first opened on May 5, 2020 and by its closing date last September, the petition was signed 230,905 times.

“Today I have the honour of rising and presenting e-Petition 2574, which is the largest parliamentary petition in Canadian history. Over 230,000 Canadians have signed a petition to stop firearms violence in Canada. This petition acknowledges that firearms violence in Canada is caused by firearms that are smuggled in illegally from countries like the United States and are related to gun violence,” said Rempel Garner.

“The petition calls upon the government to recognize that law-abiding firearms owners in Canada, hunters, sports shooters, are some of the highly vetted Canadians in the world and that the vast majority of data shows that they are not the problem when it comes to firearms violence and they are opposed to this government’s do-nothing approach on tackling this issue.”

In 2020, the Trudeau government issued an Order in Council to ban over 1,500 different types of rifles. The decision effectively bypassed any democratic debate in the House of Commons.

Last month, the Liberals expanded their overreaching gun legislation to even include replicas of any guns included in the sweeping ban.

“Update the criminal code to ensure that any device, including an unregulated airgun that looks exactly like a conventional regulated firearm (i.e., shoots over 500 feet per second), is prohibited for the purposes of import, export, sale and transfer,” read Bill C-21.

For an in-depth look into Canada’s fight for legal firearm rights, tune into True North’s new documentary series Assaulted: Justin Trudeau’s War on Gun Owners. The series, which is hosted and produced by Andrew Lawton, seeks to look beyond the politics into how the everyday lives of law-abiding Canadians are impacted by the Liberal government’s crackdown on their rights.

Entire population of Christians displaced by ISIS assault in Northern Nigeria

An entire region of northern Nigeria has been depopulated of Christians after ISIS militants launched a new assault in the African country.

According to local media, militants from the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) began assaulting the city of Dikwa in Nigeria’s Borno State in the beginning of March. Around 76,000 people, including the area’s entire Christian population, have fled up to 100km to safer territory.

“Most of our people have moved from Dikwa to Ajiri in Mafa Local Government Area.” said activist Kallamu Musa Ali of the Center of Justice on Religion and Ethnicity.

“ISWAP terrorists have re-strategised now, there is really no Christian in that place. If you see Christians, it’s those who work with NGOs or the military, so they hardly attack their fellow Muslims.”

As of Thursday, the city appears to still be in the hands of ISWAP. On Tuesday, the Nigerian military said that 30 soldiers have died fighting Islamists in recent days.

The United Nations has claimed it is unable to help the displaced people at this time.

Kallamu said the only people who are still in Dikwa are those who aren’t able to be saved.

“The people who left DIkwa for Ajiri were young people while the old ones remained,” he said. “We are only managing, the situation is very terrible.”

ISWAP was formed in 2016 by members of Boko Haram, another prominent terrorist group. Aligned and supported by ISIS in the Middle East, ISWAP has quickly become a major purveyor of terror in West Africa.

Africa has become the main target of Islamist terror in recent years since the collaspe of the ISIS caliphate in the Middle East. The situation is so dire in some areas that experts believe it is the beginning phases of a genocide.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has been the epicentre of terror on the continent. Around 37,500 people have died in the war against Islamists in Nigeria, many of them Christian civilians.

Data on hotel quarantines was incomplete before Liberals implemented program

Liberal Health Minister Patty Hajdu admitted on Wednesday before the House of Commons public safety committee that the federal government has “incomplete data” on the effectiveness of hotel quarantines versus at-home quarantines.

Hajdu made the statement in response to a question by Conservative MP and health critic Michelle Rempel Garner.

Both Hajdu and Public Safety Minister Bill Blair appeared before the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security to testify on the hotel quarantine program in the wake of reports that a woman was sexually assaulted at one of the federal facilities.

“Various Charter challenges have asked for data from the federal government showing that the hotel quarantine program is more effective at preventing the spread of COVID-19 variants than at-home quarantine coupled with pre- and post-arrival testing. Does the minister have that data?” asked Rempel Garner.

“We have had participation with a number of provinces and territories and other partners to understand various approaches at the border in terms of quarantine and the combination of quarantine and testing, we’re continuing that research with partners,” replied Hajdu.

“I will just say this, the data is incomplete internationally. We are as a world trying to figure out what the best approach is to prevent the importation of COVID-19, the combination of quarantine and testing and it is under study,” Hajdu continued.

The Canadian Constitution Foundation (CCF) is currently in the midst of launching a legal challenge against the mandatory hotel quarantine program. According to a statement by the CCF, the group is arguing that the program is in violation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Following reports of the sexual assault incident, Hajdu indicated in February that the federal hotel quarantine program was created to “protect Canadians.”

“Every woman deserves to live a life free of violence and a life of dignity but I will repeat that these border measures are in place to protect Canadians and they will remain in place until such time that science and evidence indicates that it is safe to release them,” said Hajdu.

Despite calls by the Conservatives to suspend the program, the federal government recently indicated it expanded the number of hotel quarantine sites.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is currently accepting more hotels as government-authorized accommodations to ensure additional rooms are available for travellers. Currently, there are 47 hotels available, some of which now can be booked online,” a Public Health Agency of Canada spokesperson told True North on Monday.

“More rooms will also become available as passengers get their test results and vacate the facilities following their mandatory stay.”
