Liberal immigration quotas to be revealed by the end of the month

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hopes to follow through with a plan to bring in 351,000 permanent residents by the end of 2021 despite the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the Canadian economy. 

The record-intake would be the largest Canada has experienced in a century. 

Minister of Immigration Marco Mendicino is expected to announce a detailed plan with updated three-year targets before the end of this month. 

A few months prior, Mendocino revealed a plan to boost immigration over the next four years. However, current rates have fallen short from the target of 341,000 permanent residents in 2020. 

From January to August, Canada received 128,430 permanent residents. 

In a poll commissioned by True North, three quarters (76%) of Canadians strongly agreed or moderately agreed with the statement: Canada should temporarily pause immigration until a vaccine is developed for coronavirus and the unemployment rate drops down to pre-coronavirus levels.

The poll showed a vast consensus to the immigration pause among all regions, age groups, education levels, income levels, political party preference and in both official languages. 

In September, a survey by the Department of Immigration revealed a significant chunk of Canadians want the federal government to reduce Canada’s immigration quotas in light of the pandemic. The poll found that 41% of Canadians want to bring down the quotas. 

The survey also revealed that 52% of people polled think “Canada should focus on helping unemployed Canadians rather than looking for skilled immigrants for our workforce.”

According to deputy immigration minister Catrina Tapley, it is unlikely that the Liberals will meet their intake target in 2020. 

“It’s difficult to say what an estimate might be given that there are so many uncertainties, so many uncertainties on travel, so many uncertainties in other countries that affect people’s ability to complete their application,” said Deputy Tapley on June 17 during a Commons immigration committee hearing. 

“But I want to be clear, we have continued to process applications and we are continuing to land individuals during this period.”

Saskatchewan rural communities targeted in theft spree

Maidstone RCMP have issued an advisory for residents living near Lashburn and Marshall, Saskatchewan after a string of property and vehicle thefts occurred over the weekend. 

On Friday and Saturday night, police believe that suspects targeted at least four rural properties.

Police are treating the crimes as being related. 

During the incidents, three dirt bikes, several tools and a grey 2012 Ford F150 were stolen from their owners’ properties. 

Police are investigating the matter but believe that at least two suspects were involved in the trespassing and property theft crimes. 

Authorities are asking rural residents in the area to secure their belongings and vehicles, and to report any suspicious activity to Maidstone RCMP or Crime Stoppers. 

According to a Statistics Canada report on rural crime, Saskatchewan has a rural crime rate that’s twice as high as the rest of Canada. 

In 2017, Canada had 6,210 crimes per 100,000 people in rural areas, while Saskatchewan reported 13,829 rural crimes per 100,000 people.

The Ontario government is now literally trying to take candy away from small children.

On Monday morning, Dr. David Williams, the province’s chief medical officer of health, announced how we can participate responsibly in Halloween festivities this year. The main piece of advice he offered is to flat-out cancel trick or treating in Ontario’s designed COVID-19 hotspots.

This is a joke. There’s no mincing words or holding back at this point. Banning trick or treating is taking this one senseless step too far. There’s no evidence to back up this decision.

Doug Ford tells kids not to trick-or-treat in coronavirus hotspots

The Ontario government is calling on kids to skip trick-or-treating in coronavirus hotspot zones this Halloween. 

While there will be no added restrictions or policing to prevent those who wish to partake in the popular activity, those residing in Ottawa, Peel, Toronto and York Region are being asked to stay at home.

“We just can’t have hundreds of kids showing up at your door if you live in a hotspot, especially in an apartment building,” Ford said on Monday. 

“Believe me, I don’t want to be the bad guy out there that says kids can’t go trick or treating.”

Instead of going door to door, kids are being encouraged to participate in virtual Halloween activities, movie nights or candy hunts at home. 

A recent surge in Ontario’s coronavirus case data has led to a return to more severe restrictions. In response to the uptick, Ford has reduced the permitted size for indoor and outdoor gatherings and has placed new restrictions on struggling businesses, including restaurants.

True North’s Candice Malcolm argued that leaders in politics, the media and public health are promoting panic over the second wave of COVID-19.

“Instead of the hysteria focusing on new case numbers, we should aim our focus on what really matters: number of new cases in vulnerable populations (especially those over the age of 70), number of hospitalizations, number of people in intensive care units (ICUs) and number of deaths,” Malcolm wrote.

Provincial Halloween guidelines were released only a week after Ottawa introduced similar measures. 

“Ottawa has the highest rate of COVID in Ontario, we have to do things differently here and it does mean celebrating in new ways,” said Ottawa medical office of health Vera Etches.

Federally, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam has suggested that trick-or-treating this year is fine as long as those participating follow the public health measures already in place. 

British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec released Halloween guidelines with strict public health advice but are still allowing children to participate in Halloween. 

CHCH broadcasts trigger warning before episode of Gilligan’s Island

The Hamilton-based television station CHCH broadcasted what appears to be a woke viewer discretion advisory prior to an episode of the 60’s classic, Gilligan’s Island. 

“The following presentation is a product of its time. It depicts prejudices that were wrong then and remain unacceptable today. CHCH does not condone discrimination of any kind,” said the CHCH advisory.

“Rather than ignoring past discriminatory practices, exhibiting work like this allows viewers to engage in thought or discussion that educates and promotes the importance of social justice and inclusivity. Viewer discretion is advised.”

The warning is identical to one shown before an airing of The Brady Bunch, earlier this month. 

According to IMDb, GIlligan’s island is a G-rated TV show which does not depict sex, nudity, violence, profanity, drug use or frightening scenes. 

CTV also used a similarly worded content warning before showing an episode of Seinfeld on their own television station. 

“This program is presented as originally created. It may contain language, attitudes, cultural depictions and racial prejudices which may cause offence,” claimed the CTV about Seinfeld.

CHCH and CTV are not the first networks to employ such messaging over classic TV shows and films. 

In 2019, the popular Disney+ streaming platform included cultural context disclaimers for several historical Disney films, including the original 1941 version of Dumbo.

True North reached out to CHCH for comment on the advisory and a list of other TV shows which were deemed to be discriminatory but did not hear back in time for publication. 

Globe and Mail once again publishes Chinese Communist Party propaganda

One of Canada’s largest newspapers has again used its print edition to publish propaganda written by a Chinese state-owned media outlet.

For the second time in as many months, last Saturday’s physical Globe and Mail included a two-page spread titled “China Watch,” featuring flowery content about Chinese projects written by China Daily, an English-language media outlet owned by the publicity department of the Chinese Communist Party.

The section includes pieces promoting the Chinese politburo’s environmental projects and an article on Tim Horton’s expansion into China. 

According to a disclaimer at the bottom of the two-page insert, the “content [was] produced by China Daily. The Globe and Mail’s editorial department was not involved.” 

US authorities have designated the publication a “foreign mission” for the Chinese Communist Party.

“For years, these so-called media outlets have been mouthpieces of the Chinese Communist Party and these Chinese outlets are becoming more aggressive,” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in February.

True North reached out to the Globe and Mail for comment but had not heard back by the time of this article’s publication. 

One article, titled “Yellow River cleanup delivers new vitality” goes on to praise the efforts by the Chinese government to conserve the local environment. 

“A meeting of the Politburo of the Communist party of China Central Committee on Aug 31 stressed that an effort should be made to improve the environment of the Yellow River Basin,” claimed the report. 

Another edition of The Globe and Mail from September also included two pages of China Daily content.

Toronto gangs using CERB to buy illegal guns

Toronto gangs have been using the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) to buy illegal guns from the United States.

According to the Toronto Sun, gang members have become more dangerous thanks to firearms purchased using the $2000 per month CERB payments. 

One anonymous source told the Toronto Sun that dozens of gang members have purchased guns with CERB cheques.

“We have learned of dozens across the GTA who are doing this. This enables them to buy more handguns, ‘dirty weapons’ (previously used in crimes) for between $400 and $800, and new Glocks, which are reliable and have strong stopping power, for $3,000,” the source said.

“You’ll have four guys in a car, all of them bringing 10 to 20 rounds, showing off their firepower against their rivals, to keep them at bay.”

Since the pandemic began, there has been a surge in gun violence in the GTA. By October 13, there were 402 shootings, with 70 in August alone.

A lack of police presence has also contributed to the increase in shootings. Gun violence in Toronto has substantially increased in recent years, coinciding with Toronto’s ban on street checks and carding.

While violent crime is increasing, the City of Toronto is still promising to defund the police. In August, Mayor John Tory tabled 80 different “reforms” which would implement “alternative” methods to policing and combat systemic racism within the police force.

According to the Toronto Police Services Board, the financial impact of Mayor Tory’s reforms are not yet known.

“The financial implications arising out of the recommendations contained in this report are unknown at this time. If the recommendations are approved, financial implications – including for potential costs savings or re-allocations – will be assessed on an ongoing basis,” claimed the report.

While supporting radical calls to defund the police, Tory has also ordered the already-strained police force to focus its efforts on enforcing coronavirus restrictions and gathering limits.

China strengthens ban on publishing Christian literature

The Chinese Communist government is strengthening its ban on religious material, with authorities searching businesses and arresting employees for producing Christian literature.

According to Bitter Winter, a publication with reports on religious discrimination in China, authorities are now inspecting publishers to determine if they have worked on religious texts.

Several publishers in the city of Luoyang reported that they will not deal with religious material of any kind after a recent increase in government oversight.

“The government does not allow to print religious materials nationwide, especially Christian,” one publishing house manager told Bitter Winter.

“Anyone who takes on such orders breaks the law and might be put into prison. This is the line that we absolutely can’t cross. A printing house in the city was closed down for printing religious books, and some of its staff were arrested.”

Both publishers and photocopying workers reported being threatened with massive fines or jail time if they help produce religious material.

“I don’t even dare to make copies of two sheets with religious hymns because of strict investigations,” one Luoyang photocopy shop employee said.

“I was told to report anyone who comes to copy religious materials.”

In recent years, the Chinese government has attempted to influence religious groups, forcing their beliefs align with state doctrine.

In order to legally worship in China, Christians must be registered with state-run churches and use state-approve religious texts. Rather than churches, state-approved denominations officially see themselves as part of the Chinese state.

In September, it was reported that a Chinese university was teaching students that Jesus was a murderer using a state-approved version of the Gospel of John. 

In the first six months of 2020, Chinese authorities removed crosses from over 900 churches in an effort to remove “Western” influence.

MALCOLM: Biden censorship saga shows the fix is in

According to newly released documents, the Democrat’s nominee for President tailored U.S. foreign policy to enrich their own family. And no, I’m not talking about Hillary Clinton — although, it seems she did it too.

This time around, it’s Joe Biden. And despite the severity of these revelations, the facts are being quashed by tech billionaires at Facebook and Twitter.

The New York Post released a bombshell report this week with the potential to derail Biden’s chances of winning the November election.

The story centred around Joe’s ne’er-do-well son Hunter Biden, who was hired as an executive with the Ukrainian energy firm Burisma — despite having no background experience in oil and gas and admittedly struggling with drug addiction — all while his father was VP and the point person in the Obama administration focused on Eastern Europe.

Hunter was paid at least $50,000 per month — for what? No one really knows, but Joe maintains he had no knowledge of his son’s overseas business dealings.

During a trip to Ukraine in 2015, however, VP Biden threatened to withhold $1 billion of U.S. aid unless they fire the attorney general who happened to be investigating Burisma.

Biden later boasted about meddling in Ukraine during a panel at the Council on Foreign Relations, but never explained why he was so keen to have the AG of a foreign country fired.

This was all on the public record prior to this week’s report. Then, the Post released smoking-gun emails showing not only that Joe certainly appeared to be involved in his son’s business dealings, but also that Hunter was using his father’s position to enrich himself.

One email, sent in May 2014 from Burisma’s number three executive Vadym Pozharskyi, asked Hunter for “advice on how you could use your influence” to help the company.

A year later, in April 2015, Pozharskyi thanked Hunter for setting up a meeting with Joe Biden.

“Dear Hunter, thank you for inviting me to DC and giving an opportunity to meet your father and spent (sic) some time together. It’s realty (sic) an honor and pleasure.”

In a carefully worded statement, Biden’s campaign responded only to say that this meeting was not in his “official schedule.”

In the media world, this is what we call an October Surprise. A bombshell report in the weeks leading up to the general election that could change the outcome of the vote.

But instead, the Post story was censored.

Both Facebook and Twitter immediately blocked this important piece of investigative journalism coming from one of America’s oldest newspapers, and froze the accounts of those trying to share it, including the New York Post, the Trump campaign team and Trump’s Press Secretary.

The Toronto Sun’s own Bryan Passifiume was locked out of his account for the crime of sharing a follow-up story from the Post about how Hunter tried to cash in big time from a firm in China.

I spoke to Kelly Jane Torrance, an editorial board member over at the New York Post.

“If there were ever any doubt that tech executives seek to censor news and opinions they don’t like, it’s been put to rest — by the tech executives themselves,” she told me.

The Edmonton-native and UBC alum who now lives in New York City said it’s beyond question that “big tech and big media are in the tank for Joe Biden.”

“The hypocrisy is astounding,” she said.

Another Post editor, Sohrab Ahmari — whose family fled the dictatorship of Iran and was recently a guest on my podcast the True North Speaker Series – had an even darker take.

“This is what totalitarianism looks like in our century: not men in darkened cells driving screws under the fingernails of dissidents, but tech dweebs removing from vast swaths of the Internet a damaging expose on their preferred candidate.”

The fix is in. And Trump-hating progressives are willing to lie, cheat, steal and destroy basic democratic values to get their way.
